Excitement! I've just had an email from the animal rescue people to say that a paved garden is fine, and that the only mandatory requirement is that it must be fully fenced in so the cats can't get out and meet foxes or traffic.

They also have to stay indoors until they are at least 5-6 months old and neutered. And I'd also have to promise to keep them in at night for ever.

I was terrified that they would say our garden is TOO small and fenced in, but apparently that's not an issue. However we'll have to make sure there is somewhere for them to do their dos when they do go out.

I now have to indicate which specific cats/kittens I am interested in and arrange a home visit... (NERVES!)

Sorry I missed out an 'l' - it should have said plan kitten not pan kitten which wouldn't be nice at all.

Aw that's wonderful news!

I always kept my cat in at night anyway, is that a big deal for you?

I don't mind keeping them in at night - they can spend the night curled up on my bed!

Not sure whether G is with me on the brain damaged kitten! She is exceedingly cute, though. I think I will ask for more details.

eeeeh! Kitteh!

Foxes don't seem to go for cats round here - one winter morning I saw three cats and a fox in the garden and the cats were more interested in each other than the fox, who didn't seem interested in them either. I think Dublin foxes are quite well fed though.

Yay, Kitties!

Dunno why they're so bothered about foxes - I was under the impression that most foxes avoid cats and will run away from them if hissed at.

How on earth do they expect a fence to keep cats in? My garden has six foot fences all round, and the cats have no trouble jumping up there.

I suspect if I kept mine in at night I would never get any sleep at all. They spend far more time in than out though.

Yay for getting new kitties soon! xxx

I know what you mean...

The rescue lady did send me an email saying that there is only so much you can do as an owner to keep them safe, but that they want new owners to make it as difficult as possible for them to roam when they are little. (She also sent quite a thorough explanation for why I must keep them in at night ...the jist being that night time is when most cats get injured by fights or catch fatal diseases).

I'm being uncharacteristically anxious and fretty about all of this. Am now gripped by a compulsion to tidy up and make the back yard look nice before the home check.... (as if the cats would care!)

Ah, I doubt they could jump a high fence when they're little. Mine were pretty much indoor cats until they were six months old. They have a few times been injured in fights but the vet has always patched them up OK, and I think they're immunised against most diseases. I do worry about them on the road a bit.

The cats will love it if you have lots of exciting untidiness to explore in the yard. xxx
