Excitement! I've just had an email from the animal rescue people to say that a paved garden is fine, and that the only mandatory requirement is that it must be fully fenced in so the cats can't get out and meet foxes or traffic.
They also have to stay indoors until they are at least 5-6 months old and neutered. And I'd also have to promise to keep them in at night for ever.
I was terrified that they would say our garden is TOO small and fenced in, but apparently that's not an issue. However we'll have to make sure there is somewhere for them to do their dos when they do go out.
I now have to indicate which specific cats/kittens I am interested in and arrange a home visit... (NERVES!)

Date: 2010-10-03 04:07 pm (UTC)Foxes don't seem to go for cats round here - one winter morning I saw three cats and a fox in the garden and the cats were more interested in each other than the fox, who didn't seem interested in them either. I think Dublin foxes are quite well fed though.

edited for typo

Date: 2010-10-04 10:53 am (UTC)I suspect if I kept mine in at night I would never get any sleep at all. They spend far more time in than out though.
Yay for getting new kitties soon! xxx

Date: 2010-10-04 11:44 am (UTC)The rescue lady did send me an email saying that there is only so much you can do as an owner to keep them safe, but that they want new owners to make it as difficult as possible for them to roam when they are little. (She also sent quite a thorough explanation for why I must keep them in at night ...the jist being that night time is when most cats get injured by fights or catch fatal diseases).
I'm being uncharacteristically anxious and fretty about all of this. Am now gripped by a compulsion to tidy up and make the back yard look nice before the home check.... (as if the cats would care!)
