I've just filled in an application form for cat adoption from my local animal rescue centre.

Am now FILLED with the fear that I will not pass the home inspection...

Their website states very strictly that they will NOT release kittens to a home without a garden.  Anyone who has seen my place would laugh long and loud at the word 'garden'.   We have a microscopic postage stamp of paved outdoor space...  the only soil is in a tiny, raised bed down one side.   If the cats want to go to the loo long term, they'd probably have to leap the fence and venture out into the back alley, or someone else's garden.

Oh well...  here's hoping.

Now I really need to get dressed and orgaise myself for a weekend chez [livejournal.com profile] sara_lou, who has just taken delivery of [livejournal.com profile] rosamicula

Hoorah!

Fingers and paws crossed here :-)

They might have kittens that need indoor homes - we live on quite a busy road and so we were only allowed to adopt on the basis that we kept them indoors, ours were born outside but were taken in by the shelter at as very young age indeed and they assured us they'd be alright indoors which they are :-)

I do feel a bit guilty about it sometimes but then I see posters for missing cats or cats that have been run over and then I don't.

Their info says that they might be willing to release older, indoor-only cats to houses without gardens, but never kittens.

I really hope they don't rule us out, cos I would love to have kittens this time, and watch them grow up.

I will pass on your hellos to Jane.

Those cat protection people can be a bit mental. Someone on my f'list (who eventually got a kitten from the same vet that I did) had to fill in a 20 page form about her suitability. A lot of the cat mentallers in Dublin won't give you a cat unless you keep it indoors. And they think they can call round at any time they please to check up on 'their' cat.

On which subject don't ever ask 'is it ok to keep a cat indoors permanently' on a pet owners' messageboard - World War III will ensue.

The realm of the cat owner is often the realm of the nutter, I have found. You don't seem to get that special kind of bonkers in the dog owners world.

Lol, I will bear that in mind :-)

I know what you mean about cat nutters. I suspect the rescue centre will put me through much more rigorous checks than any breeder would. I just hope I pass...

My last cat was adopted from the RSPCA about 15 years ago and all it took was a 10-minute interview. They must have become way more rigorous since then.

The RSPCA are a more sensible organisation. The smaller charities, like Cat's Aid here - they're all retired women with an awful lot of time on their hands.

Heh. A friend at work got her cats from one of those. (Mad old biddies running independent cat charities)

They are scary. When I said I didn't want to take any of the mad kittens they offered me, I had a moment where I seriously thought one of them was going to stab me in the face.

Haha, I got my cats from a rescue centre that was a tiny back room at the back of a charity shop in Barking, from a chain smoking lady. I say charity shop, but basically a room full of mounds of clothes. No form of home check or even asking about where we lived was done.

To be fair, they did insist that the kittens had the first half of their vaccinations before we could take them home, and that we signed up to say we'd get the rest of the vaccinations and get them neutered. And demanded a £100 donation.

This is what happens when you have to get cats now now now at once the second your allergic flatmate moves out. xxx

Is that one of the charity shop cats there?

Hee! No, dog owners just breed dogs that have breathing difficulties, palates too small for their teeth, hips and spines that slip out of place, and deformed brain cavities. Nothing mental there! ;)

I kind of understand where the Cat Protection people are coming from. Some people try to adopt abandoned cats, thinking it's going to be a cheap and easy way of getting hold of a pet, that they won't necessarily take care of - and the CP people don't want an already possibly traumatised animal going to another place where it will be further messed about. So it does make sense. I think they view themselves as a sort of cat Social Services.

Indeed! And when I was on a cycling holiday through Alsace I did see a well-to-do lady pushing two terriers in a double buggy.

Fair point about the Cat Protection crowd. Though I still think cat people have more eccentrics than dog people. You should see my cat-sitter. She writes reports of her visit - from my cats' points of view.

Dear sweet god.

I suspect dog people and cat people have different eccentricities. Dog people are terribly hands-on and don't think anything of their darling stamping muddy rubbish all over yer best silk dress. Cat people drink too much tea and wear purple, flowing clothes. Dog people like things to be all about them. Cat people would rather you didn't notice them too much. Eeh,

*Does the 'comme ci comme ca' hand gesture*

And I say that as a woman with four cats, who is wearing purple trousers. So no bias there. None at all. *cough*

I don't wear a lot of purple, though I do have one purple flowing dress!

All my clothes are covered in cat hair and curry stains so yes I'd rather people didn't notice me...

I tried one of those lint roller things the other day. It was a REVELATION. Suddenly I realised that clothes have colours, and that not everyone goes out looking as if they've just been humping a yeti.

From: [identity profile] lazy-hoor.livejournal.com
Hahaha! I've got about 4 different types of lint roller - the rubbery one you rinse; a felty-type one; a metal one that you have to rub on the carpet first and the sticky label lint one. Why do I still look like I've humped a yeti?!

Actually I've found the best thing to get rid of cat hair is a rubber glove...

Date: 2010-10-01 02:26 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] chiller.livejournal.com
Wait. Doesn't the metal one you rub on the carpet just .. immediately get covered with cat hairs from the carpet?

Date: 2010-10-01 02:28 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] lazy-hoor.livejournal.com
Yes it does! It's meant to create a static charge. I got fed up with it very quickly.

From: [identity profile] chiller.livejournal.com
Yes, I can see they hadn';t thought that one through, at the design stage.

I hadn't tried rubber gloves! I am so giving that a try later, when Flatmate isn't looking. I imagine his reaction to catching me wearing Marigolds and caressing my own thighs in the kitchen might involve a certain amount of eye-rolling.

I have memories of my sister telling me about how she'd gone over an entire living-room carpet with a damp ruber glove to remove cat hair when moving out of a rented house!

For furniture, I find a cat-brush works very well.

Those rubbery "Kong" cat-smoother things are brill for picking cat hair up off clothes / furniture / cats.

Oh yes, the ones like giant paper-backed sellotape (which makes an effective, if fiddly, alternative when you run out!) A godsend.

Yes, I had always eschewed them, then Flatmate brought some home and I now leave the place divested of my furry patina on a semi-regular basis!

I did see a well-to-do lady pushing two terriers in a double buggy.

I once saw what I thought was a small pram being pushed round a branch of TK Maxx by a woman. Then I saw the front had a mesh cover, which had me wondering abut exactly what sort of baby was in there before I realised it was designed to carry a dog! It was bright pink.

You can get cat ones, too. And double buggies, with one on top of the other (although the only people I know who use them, use them for transporting show cats, where they're actually a very practical idea. But that's assuming you don't already think the idea of showing cats is completely barking. Which it is).

I think you're right. They also take a lot of care over matching the personality of the cat to its future owners.

G and I have decide that if our garden scores nil points we will ask them what would it take to make it suitable and then see if we can fix it and try again later.

So are you definitely decided on a rescue kitten, then? Or are you going to take a look and see what's there?

Am still vaguely dithery, but there seems to have been a recent influx of kittens intothe rescue centres and every time I look on their websites it melts my heart.

So I decided to apply and see what happens. Am a teeny bit anxious in case I don't think any of the cats are right and they think I am being a primadonna... (but then again they may decide I am the one who is not right!)

It's SO worth a look - you might find just the little bundle you're after! And if not - well, you're no worse off. If you don't find a cat that appeals DO walk away - because really, who cares what they think? Whereas the cat's going to be with you for as long as 20 years, if you're lucky!

THey should be more concerned about whether or not you live on a main road and/or that you will keep him/her/them in at night. What about cats who don't like going outside.

I am sure you will do fine. If you need to borrow any cat/kitten paraphenalia to prove your worthiness just let me know.
