It's lunchtime and I feel chatty
Sep. 23rd, 2010 12:48 pmGood afternoon, fiends. How are you liking the sudden onset of Autumn?
I know the rain is a bit depressing and all that... but I can't escape the little frisson of excitement at the idea of it being time for new boots and knitwear and lovely things like that.
Meanwhile Liberty is doing its best to tempt me horribly. They emailed me to say that their haberdashery section has doubled in size and has loads of new crafty things and bundles of vintage fabric... (be still my beating heart).
My tube journeys this week are being magically transported by I Capture the Castle. What a lovely pile of escapist nonsense it is. I really wish I'd read it as a child as it is exactly the sort of tale I would have loved... all overblown romantic poverty and make-do-and-mend. (Not realistic, grubby poverty, where people steal from each other and turn to drugs and alcohol.... but the sort where people live in a enormous, crumbling ruin and girls have to be strong and make dresses out of old scraps and save candle stubs so that they can read in bed... and other such nonsense). Sigh...
This week is rocketing towards the weekend, which is good... though, on the down side, it probably means that I have reached an age where my entire life is rocketing by. On that topic, I have a theory on making your life feel longer. It is not really my theory - I saw a fascinating documentary on perceptions of time on BBC4 that introduced the idea and I have been pondering on it ever since and am now totally convinced by it. In a nutshell, it is to do with avoiding routine and trying to do new or non-standard things as often as possible - every day if you can. (A good example is to compare a holiday where you lie on a beach for two weeks with one where you go to lots of different places and do slightly different things every day. In the majority of cases, the varied one feels twice as long and you remember it as if it were a much longer holiday than the other one). Anyway it really does work... even in everyday life. So say I.
Well I appear to have a lunchtime meeting to go to.... and nothing else of value to say anyway, so I'll be off.
Happy Thursday all...

Date: 2010-09-23 12:04 pm (UTC)I can't wait for it to become properly cold as I like wearing lots of layers and I have three new pairs of armwarmers to wear - including a pair I made all by myself.
My next knitting project is to knit a bunny rabbit toy or maybe even a tea cosy now I've got the hang of this 2x2 rib malarkey.
