How lovely are these!

Cuteness!

Amazing armour-plated creature

These eleflumps walked right past us as we were having lunch!

What IS that yellow stuff on the flower?

Snuggly lemurs = cute!

These friendly little deer mara wander freely around the park (correction courtesy of Ivory Goddess)

Awww... goats.  I like goats.

Cheerful lizard

There is something v. odd about seeing a pool of penguins in the middle of sweeping English countryside

The cheetah cubs are the cutest thing ever... (it's definitely for the best that people like me can't get near them.)

Sponge - it makes it easier for some butterflys and other flying critters to take up a sugary food solution via their proboscis :-)

My 2 and a quarter year old nephew has been to the zoo today and when I asked him what he saw he told me simply and accurately 'animals'. He is very disappointed that there are no elephants or giraffes anywhere on Jersey but he was very taken with the orangutangs and the meerkats - the meerkat enclosure has a glass bubble in the middle where you can stand and they run past or come up to the glass to look at you.

Ah, sponge. Thank you.

The main thing I noticed about the meerkats is that, other than the one on sentry duty, they never sit still. The ones at Whipsnade spent the whole time running about like crazy as if they were on some kind of mission.

Tsk. ;-)

On other topic, can't remember whether I mentioned my dates for Bergamo. We'll be arriving on the Sat evening (11th Sep) in time for dinner somewhere and then staying all day on the Sunday before heading to Peschiera on the Monday morning. I would like to bimble around the old town and find nice places to eat out, but we have no specific plans so please feel free to suggest good things to do or see in Bergamo. (I'm assuming you and Ivan will be up for lunch and/or dinner?)

I so can't wait to be on hols in lovely Italy...

The 'friendly little deer' are actually GIANT RATS!!

OK, giant rodents - Mara, from Patagonia: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mara_%28mammal%29

(look at the feet - deer don't generally have claws)

You're right. It is indeed a Mara. They did also have water deer wandering around, but clearly that wasn't one of them. (Still cute though.)

Oh, definitely cute. There was one loose at Newquay zoo when we went in July - at the time I couldn't find the name of what it was, I just knew it was a giant rodent that wasn't a coypu or capybara.

Funnily enough, those Mara reminded me mostly of rabbits, because they were prone to being springy and bouncing around when startled.
