Are any of you fine people planning to watch Sherlock?   (Are they doing modern re-workings of Conan Doyle's stories or writing new ones?  I ask, because I am kind of hoping it's the former.)

Otherly - I am pleased to report that the iPhone app for Spotify premium has now fixed all of the things that were wrong with it.  It does proper multi-tasking and I can now use my headphone controls to skip tracks, pause and so on without it getting confused with the iPod.  (The only thing that needs minor improvement is the syncing functionality.)

Ok, that is all.

(Retainers from Moffat and Spotify are in the post, naturellement)

No - it hasn't got Basil Rathbone in it and so will be officially pants ;-)

I will give it a look but I'm not holding out much hope.

It was always Jeremy Brett for me.

I am going to give it a try though. (Someone on TV commented that they didn't want to like it but were won over)

I think the best Sherlock as in most faithful to the character and stories as written is Clive Merrison in the BBC Radio adaptations.
I did go and see Jeremy Brett live on stage as Sherlock at the Palace Theatre in Manchester many moons ago. It wasn't a very good production and it was very cold outside and very warm in the theatre and to my shame I found myself nodding off...

The TV ones with Jeremy Brett lost a bit of their spark towards the end. It's a bit sad because in retrospect you can see when he started to get ill.

I absolutely intend to watch it. It appears to have more in common with the recent film than anything else.

I've never read any Sherlock Holmes and the only film/tv version I've seen was Guy Ritchie's effort (meh). I might check this one out because Mark Gattis is a great writer and Benedict Cumberbatch is the best name ever!

Are the books worth a read?

The books are great, try a few of the short stories and see what you think. (You can read them all in full text online).

I haven't seen the Guy Richie effort, so we're even ;-)

It might be worth the price of a rental for this scene alone:

(also great, if somewhat baffling, use of the song Rocky Road to Dublin)

I've just read A Scandal in Bohemia. I enjoyed it! Might print off another one now...

Yes, planning to watch Sherlock, don't know if the stories are new or re-worked (the first one is called A Study In Pink so there will at the very least be references), open-minded but hoping it will be good.
