Now that I am no longer deaf I feel compelled to ask - why do people bring their crying babies into the office?

Why don't they bring kittens and puppies instead?  That would be so much more acceptable, n'est ce pas?

I'm sure I'd enjoy writing this feasibility report far more if I had a purring cat on my lap, whereas the presence of a bald, shrieking, pink harpie just makes my continued existence in this world seem altogether less 'feasible'.

Hmph.

Because their baby is the most gorgeous bundle of loveliness ever to exist. No-one else could possibly fail to agree, and everyone wants to join in the adoration.

*cough*

So much more acceptable to bring kittens and puppies, as I am my own boss in effect (well Pandy is really but he isn't at home during the day) I can enforce a no babies at work rule easily....if only I ruled the world.

But why does it make you feel less feasible? The thing I hated most when people brought their kids in though was the question of 'aah but doesn't it make you want one?' and their affront at my response of 'No, it just reaffirms my decision not to have one' though if their baby was nice I'd add a prefix of 'no, lovely as they are....'

I was merely being flippant about the viability of going on living while there is a crying baby within earshot.

The thing about babies is that you have to 'know' them. Some are very cute, but really only the ones that belong to close family and fiends. Random colleagues' babies are about as interesting as someone else's surreal dreams.

Kittens, on the other hand, are unfailingly interesting regardless of who they belong to.

Oh god yes I know what you mean - crying children and other people's keen-ness to share their shit music with me on public transport was one of the main reasons I got an mp3 player.

And kittens are always unfailingly gorgeous, unlike some children - one that was brought into work was really quite ugly and his mother said in all honestly and seriousness 'he does have a face only his mother could love'.

Babies. They don't DO anything. I'd be much more excited if people brought their Dyson in so I could take it apart and see how it worked.

OTOH, it's nice that people love their babies so much, and I feel rather touched by that. So in conclusion: OH I DON'T KNOW.

'Cos if they brought kittens and puppies no-one would get any work done?

This is a very good point. Even in the unlikely event of tearing myself away from the cutes, the audible squee fest from everyone else would make working impossible.

The office where I used to work adopted a cat - it used to sleep on my desk on warm afternoons and slept in the security office at night ... The office had the best atmosphere ever!

God I know. I like friend's babies but colleagues - I feel I have to put on a show of being interested. And yes, then there's the 'Doesn't it make you want one?' comments.

I can't understand how other people's random babies are supposed to make you want one... (narcissism and a desire for your own genes to live forever are far more realistic drivers.)

Certainly not! Me and my colleague who's getting biological clock pangs but can't persuade her bf to have kids put in an appearance then sat in another office and grumped.

The proud father is bringing his son in again soon :-O

Except fox would not get near babies because it would be too busy fending off unwanted squee-cuddles from me
