Dear fiends...

I think I'm having a big, cliched mid-life crisis. Every day I get out of bed and am crippled by soul-crushing ennui.

I want to run away and join the foreign legion...

...but instead I've signed up for a crochet class.

Go me!

So tell me... what's floating your boats?

I think I'm in the same place as you...

1. Knitting (though it's a bit hit and miss right now);
2. Jewellery making;
3. New ideas for my cards;
4. Developing ideas for my stash of felt...
5. Preparing to write.

What makes you think that I'm currently in the wrong job...?

Maybe we should go into partnership.
You and me... changing the world one doily at a time.

Ha ha ha! Brilliant!

Actually, having my own business is my medium-term goal. I'm starting small just so that I get the basics right, then I want to take the plunge...

re: your business, it's an excellent goal to have and I wish you, wholeheartedly, the best of luck with it.

(I should probably take a leaf out of your book... when it comes to "not knowing what I want", I'm an expert.)

I'm obviously in a bit of a "house fixing" frenzy at the moment. Hard to concentrate on too much else.

I'm getting back into my keep fit and about to start half marathon training.

I'm booking shark dives in South Africa -- a good chance to dive with tiger sharks and maybe see a great white.

Is it a good chance of being eaten too? ;-)

It's disappointingly hard to be eaten by a shark. Given that they throw fish guts in the water to attract them before you go scuba-ing we will be making our best good faith efforts but it turns out sharks just don't tend to eat divers -- apparently those cylinders of compressed air give them wind.

So are you trying to tell me Jaws was made up and not a documentary then? I want my money back Mr Speilberg ;-)

Peter Benchley has since apologised to sharks!

http://www.sharkfriends.com/sharks/PBarticle.html

I couldn't write "Jaws" today. The extensive new knowledge of sharks would make it impossible for me to create, in good conscience, a villain of the magnitude and malignity of the original.

Aww Peter Benchley, no secondhand shop is complete without a copy of The Deep on it's shelves.

Unrelated but look at the name of the reporter the Times selected for the papal child abuse story.

Don't know why but I thought that might tickle you.

Oh dear. That is an unfortunate name under the circumstances isn't it? Still it almost seems to have been a papal command doesn't it?

He died recently.

Unfortunately his will didn't stipulate that his body be used for chumming, which would have been FAB.

I take it you mean "turned into pet food" cos in our house that phrase would mean something else entirely!

Lengthy house-related frenzies are marvellous for distracting from soul sapping ennui. Maybe we all need to move house every now and then ...or go and commune with sharks!

(Right now the idea of getting fit is enough to make me not get out of bed at all)

Oooh I'd love to learn how to crochet - my Nana crocheted the most amazing things. I have read how to guides but it remains an elusive and unmistressed skill.

Cooking and generally being very domesticated, reading - currently got We Were The Mulvaneys on the go - I love Joyce Carol Oates even if it can be somewhat (!) grim, and Stuart Maconie's latest, lovely nostalgic tv on ITV4 though sadly most of it has been displaced by sodding cricket at the moment and fun with friends.

I look to your sunny, domestic posts to keep me sane when I am lost in deepest work malaise.

I have vaguely tried crochet before but was rubbish and couldn't get the hang of it (I could not work out what was a stitch and what was just a part of the amorphous yarny blob). I think my brain favours knitting because it is in straight lines and involves pointy sticks and you know how many stitches you have... but I would like to learn the more freeform crochet type stuff.

Aww thank you - speaking of domesticity can you post or email me the link to your chocolate truffle recipe? I've a hankering to make some for Mr Pops for Easter.

My Nana by her own admission 'couldn't folly a pattren' - deliberate sp and imagine that said in a Dublin accent, she would look at you, start crocheting and then say 'come 'ere to me you', measure up what she'd done against you, crochet for a while longer and then call you over again and then couple of days later present you with a dress or a jumper or a nice shawl. It was amazing skill and it's a shame I never got her to pass on that skill when she was still alive.

That sounds like a fabuloso way to spend the day (except for the bit about going to work, obv). Hope your party goes with a swing...

I've just signed up for a 3-day corsetry course in May. All kit supplied, including the machines. 3 days of mindless creativity (if you know what I mean) is just what the doctor ordered.

It would be like running away in doily form.
