All in the best possible taste!
Feb. 28th, 2010 05:54 pmGood aftenoon fiends, I hope you are having pleasing Sundays.
I'm happy to report that Silence! The Musical is very funny and well worth a visit, should it happen to tour round your way. G and I saw it last night in a tiny fringe venue that only held about 50 people but was fully sold out. The actress playing Clarice did an excellent job of mimicking Jodie Foster... (she jogged on stage in a grey tracksuit and saluted a senior officer with the words "Mah name is Clareesh Shtarling Shurrr".) The man playing Lecter also did a fine job. The whole thing was in gleefully bad taste, with plenty of jazz hands at inappropriate lyrics ("it puts the fucking lotion in the fucking basket!") On the way up the stairs to the theatre there were mock posters for other musicals, including Schindler!, Dawn! (of the dead) and Sophie! (clarified by a pic of Meryl streep in a headscarf in case there was any doubt).
Anyway moving on, I have a question for you, dear fiends. Would you say that you are ever guilty of positive prejudice? By this, I mean a tendency to assume that certain groups of people are all lovely and good, without having any real grounds to base it on?
I have noted recently that I tend to assume Canadians will be friendly, intelligent and morally sound people. I'm not sure where I got this idea from (...and obviously I am excluding the ones who club baby seals). Similarly, I tend to assume that Scandinavians will be enlightened people with balanced views and a gentle sense of humour. Why do I think this? (I don't really know any Scandinavians... and according to Stieg Larsson quite a few of them seem to be misogynistic psychopaths).
Hmmm. It is most perplexing. Am I alone with these strange ill-informed fangirl beliefs, or do you lot suffer from similar delusions?
Well I suppose I'd better get on and see whether I can cleanse my house of evil...(lots of funny business going on these days.)
