Let me take you to another dimension
Dec. 22nd, 2009 04:18 pmToday we lugged stupid amounts of calorific crap home from Waitrose and also took delivery of some veggie black pudding from The Lancaster Smokehouse. This is going to become part of the starter for christmas day... (a menu for 3 pescatarians and a carnivore - the starter will be seared scallops with black pudding on a stripe of pea and mint puree.)
Having finally unpacked it all, my kitchen counter now sports a beautiful pile of redness. The reddest of red things ever... cranberries, hot red chillies and sweet romano peppers. The former will become cranberry sauce. The latter I intend to *try* and turn into NIgella's chilli jelly. (No idea whether it will work - I've never made jam or chutney before, so wish me luck). I was hindered in jar-washing by my 3d glasses that kept slipping back onto my nose and making everything psychedelic... I'd forgotten they were still on my head and would probably have gone out in them looking like Luna Lovegood.
The reason for the specs is that G and I have finally started watching all of the 3D stuff that we recorded last month during Channel 4's special. My verdict so far is that the "Top Ten 3d Moments Eva" was dreadful - most of it was just talking heads with seriously low rent slebs. The few clips that were shown didn't work very well... mainly because they hadn't taken into account that half of those clips were designed for the big screen or for glasses with a slightly different hue - both of which make a huge difference.
Conversely, the Queen's coronation filmed in 3D was fantastic! I was really impressed by the subtle, but extremely clear 3d effect in most of the scenes. They totally had a handle on 3d in the 50s...
I haven't watched Dezzer's 3d spectacular yet, or Friday 13th Part III. Fingers crossed.
One thing that really captivated me was Brian May's fantastic gadge collection of Victorian steroscopes. I lust after steroscopes on ebay all the time... What would I give to be allowed to go and play with those! (Brian, on the off chance that you read my LiveJournal, please please please can I come round for tea and play with your toys? Please? I will bring treats and promise I won't laugh at your hair...)
I totally agreed with him when he said ever since he learned about 3d photography, he can't understand why everyone isn't doing it all of the time. I feel likewise... and also it bugs me that in the 50s people were doing a pretty good job of filming live action 3d movies, yet all we get these days is animation and CGI. Tsk! What I want is a well-made, well-scripted live action blockbuster in 3d... is that too much to ask for? (For the time being I will go and see Avatar, but I am feeling unconvinced by the trailers.)

Date: 2009-12-22 05:39 pm (UTC)Did I tell you about the truly appalling veggie caviar I had at taste London? Do not Ever. So foul. I think I did tell you; I am sure I needed to share the truma...
I have scallops in the freezer to possibly feed P. His will be on either parsnip or jerusalem artichoke puree, depending on how frozen the soil is on Xmas Day and how much digging I can be bothered to do...

Date: 2009-12-22 06:09 pm (UTC)We tried it a few years ago and as far as I can remember it did taste like black pudding (though it's been many a year since I had the real thing!) There is more info about what's in it here... http://www.blackpuddingsbury.co.uk/files/product8.pdf
Parsnip puree sounds like a nice option (I never have parsnips these days because G hates them).
