Hello festive fiendies!  Just wondering...  would any of you care to recommend any favoured (or lesser-known) christmas songs that I could add to my spotify playlist?

I'm trying to cobble together an upbeat list for xmas entertaining.  Nothing serious or pretentious, but ideally avoiding tracks that are so played-to-death they make you want to wail at the moon (hence I have been sacreligious and left off the sainted Pogues and Waitresses.)

So far, with some heavy assistance from obsessed, muso white boys on t'interweb, I've compiled this list-in-progress... http://open.spotify.com/user/themeanestcat/playlist/06E2plrZl1XWuprfERfO9y

What do you reckon it needs?  (More Aretha?  Some glam rock?  Some cheesy motown classics?  Even more spotty-white-boy-muso-guitar-bollox?)

All suggestions warmly considered, with the possible exceptions of...

  • Anything dreary (e.g. wailing goth nonsense or indie misery)
  • Spinal Tap (who I've just deleted for being too silly, even for christmas)
  • Surfjan Stevens, whose xmas songs make me want to cry with boredom
  • Sweary christmas rapping about doing things with hoes
Many thanks all!  :-)

I know I'll be courting the contemptuous hilarity of my peers by suggesting this, but I actually rather liked that Christmas song that The Darkness did back when they were still famous. 'Christmastime (don't let the Bell's end)', was that what it was called?

But no Slade or Roy bloody Wood, no!

That song was written and recorded purely and simply so Justin Trousersnake would have an excuse to stand in front of a crowd of children and shout "Bell-end!" at the top of his lungs.

Not that ths is necessarily a bad thing, mind you.

Sue, I have a whole long playlist of "alternative" Christmas songs, and I'll happily send you the whole list, but many of them aren't actually particularly cheerful or upbeat. In fact, quite a lot of them are rather miserable.

Also, I'm not a boy.

But if I were, I'd probably recommend "It's clichéd to be cynical at Christmas" by Half Man Half Biscuit.

Ooh yes, please do send... I'm sure I can weed out the ones with too much abject misery :-)

Fab, thanks :-)
A few of those are already on my list, and some I tried to find on Spotters but failed. I might try again though... (it seems to give diff results depending on what order you type things)

In case you're interested, I just spotted an album of alternative Xmas tracks on Spotify called "We Love Yule"... (thought you might like a few of them)

Every year I buy a new Christmas themed CD & this year I really got a corker! It's called, 'I'm Gonna Lasso Santa' & is a compilation of Jump Blues, Rock 'n' Roll & Hillbilly Christmas tracks from 20s - 50s. My favourite track is 'We Wanna See Santa do the Mambo' by Big John Greer. I also love the Hawaiian slide guitar on 'Christmas Island' by The Dinning Sisters & 'Trim Your Tree' by Jimmy Butler is hilarious, if absolutely filthy & deeply inappropriate for Christmas.
