My advice be whatever you decide take a map or some kind of guide book - we went to Brussels, then drove to Ghent to see Soft Cell and we didn't take a map, nearly got killed going the wrong way down a slip road and almost came to blows because we were both so stressed with being lost and trying to find our way round and back to our hotel again Brussels. We were both extremely stressed with work at the time and not thinking straight. We look back on it now and say 'what on earth were we thinking?' and we keep talking about going back but this time with a map.
There are some very fabulous art galleries though which we kind of stumbled upon in our not knowing where we were going wanderings.
Sage advice... I tend to be a bit of an army General when it comes to planning holidays, so I'd better make sure I don't slip into laissez faire... :-)
