Happy lunchtime fiends.  Hope you are all having lovely Sundays.

Mine started out in a state of high stress and agitation, having been prevented from completing an important mission by a hungry cat miaowing in my face.  Then my interfering bladder piped up in agreement that it was high time to get up...  (don't they have any sense of priority?  I missed my train to Paris and let a dangerous operative escape, damn it!)

Ok, time to talk about TV...

I realise that I moan about TV quite a lot so this time I want to mention something brilliant.  In the last couple of weeks I have been watching re-runs of an outstanding documentary series on BBC4 called The Genius of Photography, which traces the technical and artistic growth of photography from its birth in the 19th century to the present day.  Tragically, I missed the first episode, but I'm sure it will be repeated again.

The thing is, I would defy anybody to watch an episode and not feel utterly entranced from beginning to end, even if they are not interested in photography... it really is that good.   I would like to hijack media studies modules up and down the country and force all of the students to watch the series as a lesson in how to make documentaries, and then get them to compare and contrast with episodes of Horizon and other such bollocks.

Brief thoughts about Watchmen...
I should start by saying I never read the book (sacrilege, I believe) but mainly because I am not much into the whole superhero genre.  But I did enjoy the film.  The lack of male eye candy (assuming naked blue penises don't hit the spot) is offset by the sufficiently salivation-worthy fetish boots worn by the two female leads.  I would have liked a few more scenes of good, honest, arse kicking...  like when they storm the prison.  I have simple needs.   (A bit like last week's Sarah Connor Chronicles where Shirley Manson unleashes metallic armageddon in a factory and you think... "ooh, can't you just do more of that every week?")

On food-related matters...
Where and when can you get samphire?  I am gagging to try it but even our posho local Waitrose didn't have any in stock yesterday.  Hmph.  (Mind you, baby fennel = yum.)   Also, why don't Ocado do Hebridean smoked scallops?  Tsk!   Finally, I have reached the belated conclusion that halibut is seriously delicious when cooked well... why has it taken so long to work that out?  Have made a resolution to order it more often from my live in chef.

Moving onto Podcasts...
I know they have been around for donkey's years, but I have only just started subscribing to them properly in the last few weeks and now I am becoming insatiable.  Top of my funny list so far is "Answer Me This"  (http://answermethis.wordpress.com/)   ...do any of you listen to it?  G and I are currently working our way through back episodes from 2006 and it makes us snigger with delightful regularity.  Would definitely recommend.

I have also just discovered the alarmingly nerdy world of knitting podcasts... yes, they really do exist and they're just so goddamned cosy!  Nerdy or not, it seems that listening to someone witter on about their yarn stash or accidental felting disasters warms the cockles of my heart.  God bless the internet!

Another new discovery is the range of quiz podcasts that are out there, including music quizzes and the like.  If nothing else, they are helping to fill the gaping hole left behind in the wake of Gail Trimble...   (when does Uni C The Professionals start up?)

And then there are video casts...   (which have reminded me, if nothing else, that Amanda Palmer has one hell of a set of gnashers.)

So anyway...  assuming I already know about the R4 ones, what else is good?  Tell me tell me... I want more podcasts!  More!

It's not the season for samphire yet, but when it is (May/June, possibly late April) you can get it in Borough, or all good fishmongers... I get mine in the one at Notting Hill Gate because it's convenient for work. Mmm, samphire.

Ah... thanks. For some reason I thought March was the samphire season. I will be patient...

Did you find it overlong? _ It seems to come in at about 3 hours long, we want to see it but not too sure it would be worth it if it started to drag?

In fairness it is quite long, but not so much that I felt like dozing off. I think if you're a Watchmen fan then the length won't bother you at all. On the ther hand if you're simply hoping for a fast-paced action pic, you might find it drags a little (e.g. compared with films like X-men and the like).

Thanks, I want to see the international as well next week so I am looking to see which films are best seen at the cinema vs waiting for the DVD .. I think that Watchman looks like a cinema visit : )

I saw Watchmen this afternoon and really loved it. Thought to begin with it would be painfully long but not at all.

I thought there was a bit somewhere near the middle where it felt long, but then it picked up again and I was re-engaged. (I bet you liked the boots, too...)

Actually I was watching out for the blue penises everyone was going on about, and they were decidedly not as prominent as the attention would suggest!

Hmm... I'd like a man who glows in the dark and can actually go off and do other stuff while being in bed with you, rather than just thinking about it ;-)

I suppose he also has the ability to change size at will... which could come in useful.

That and the several pairs of hands. I bet he can breathe through his ears as well.
