For reasons I won't go into, it has not been a good day. Given current events, I really didn't think that it would be possible for anything to make me laugh today. But it turns out I was wrong... and it's all thanks to Uncle Amazon.
Shortly after 4pm I received an email informing me that - a whole year after joining up - I have FINALLY made some money from the Amazon Associates scheme... (21p to be precise). For those not in the know, the idea is that you can link to books or other items from your web site, and if someone buys the item by clicking on your link, you get commission. So about a year ago I thought "what the hell" and updated all of the book recommendations on my art blog to Associates links.
Having heard nothing for a year, I was rather excited by the sudden earning of 21p and immensely curious to find out which book it was that my recommendation had prompted someone to buy. So imagine my confusion - fast replaced by hysteria - when I discovered that I had received commission on The Cliff Richard Official Calendar, 2009.
Can anybody explain this to me??? Nowhere on my blog have I recommended such a demonic item. I can only assume that the Associates scheme must be more lenient than I thought... and if someone clicks on one of your links and then buys something completely different you still get commission.
While this idea of Amazonian generosity is a pleasant surprise, it does nothing to override the disturbance I am feeling upon discovering that my blog demographic matches that of the Cliff Richard fan club. Still... I really needed that laugh. So thank you, whoever you are.
