Sunday Bloody Sunday
Jan. 25th, 2009 01:34 pmHappy Sunday! It's a lil bit quiet on LJ... So what are y'all up to? (those who are not still in bed sleeping off Childeric's glam-themed party.) Did anyone go to Rosa's for cake? I want to know what the blueberry and vanilla ring tasted like before I order G to go and make one...
Pussy cat news: This week I am concerned about my poor, beloved little baby Jessica, who is generally ailment-ridden and showing her age more than ever. She is so little and skinny these days it's like picking up a piece of paper - and she's lost all agility in her legs. That and a lot of vomiting/bowel issues. The vet has not found any conclusive problems so the next step might be to scan for possible tumours. However today she is perky and purry, so who knows. (Have any of you noticed how unbelievably soft a cat's skin is, where it gets shaved for blood samples?)
On other things: the latest faddy idea being churned around my mind is the possibility of starting an Etsy shop. G has suggested this to me a few times, mainly in reaction to my obscene yarn mountain and the proliferation of un-worn knitted scarfy-looking things that dangle from our banister rail. I usually shrug off the idea, because a) I haven't got the time and b) there is no way on earth that it will ever make any money. It would be a labour of love, and little more.
On the plus side, there is nothing much to lose... (it's free to set up a shop and the only charges are a flat rate of approx 12p per listed item, with no sales commission.) However, the sharp reality is that I'd need to invest in all sorts of props to get started, cos the standard of pre-sales presentation on etsy is extremely high and I'm buggered if I'm going to turn up like a poor country cousin and lower the tone. If you don't display your creations draped artfully on a white, tailor's dummy, you're really not going to cut the mustard... and that's not to mention the equally high standards of packaging, branding, business cards and the like... But, I dunno, it could be fun to try, if I didn't take it too seriously. Hmmm...
For yarn fetishists only:

So, what to do with 600 yards of handspun angora? As light as a feather, very fine and with only the subtlest of halos... could easily pass for cashmere (am guessing it is about a 3ply weight)
Square eyed update: I watched I Am Leg End last night and thought it was really good. Anyone beg to differ?
As is my usual way, all interest in Sleb BB went AWOL about a week before the end. But I am just popping back to say "yay!" to ulrika, having discovered yesterday that she won. She was a delightfully abrasive character and such an outsider for the first week or two, I can't believe she turned it around. Good on her. (Plus, I love the idea of the American 'superstars' scratching their heads and saying "um, did we really just get beat by a Swedish weathergirl?" )

Date: 2009-01-25 02:18 pm (UTC)There may be a good reason for that... I have seen some hand-knitted horrors in my time. Mind you, this one has a certain je ne sais quoi... http://www.bridalwave.tv/JemmaSykes.jpg

Knit it back into the shape of a huge fluffy rabbit?
Poor Jess -- she's such a funny beast. Hope she recovers.

Date: 2009-01-25 04:26 pm (UTC)Funnily enough that is *exactly* what a lot of knitters choose to do with angora! (I sometimes wonder how we knutters would look through the dispassionate eyes of an alien species... "I've got this great idea... lets shave that rabbit, then we can spin its fur and knit it back into a rabbit, yeah?"

Date: 2009-01-25 04:46 pm (UTC)I haven't even considered the notions of marketing and promotion... I spose for me this would be a hobby-ette at best, so my thinking has only got as far as the idea of putting a few bits on there and not worrying too much if nobody buys them :-p

Date: 2009-01-25 04:53 pm (UTC)I've only sold 6 items on Etsy, and I don't know if it's a lack of exposure or that people just don't want to buy cards online (I have 71 supporters, but only 1 person has bought anything). I just don't have the time to devote to promotion and faffing around with the forums.

Date: 2009-01-25 06:00 pm (UTC)Your cards look like they would definitely sell, there is a big market for that style, especially teenage girls - is there a name for it, that kind of Japanese kitsch style, like hello kitty? (Sorry if that is not the right way to describe them!)
You may be right that some products sell well online and others just don't. (The same may well go for knitted goods and clothing that people would prefer to feel before buying.)
