Hello fiends, how are things?  I hardly get time to post these days, but here is a v. quick square eyed fly-by...

I've watched two films this week.

The first was 500 Days of Summer, starring Zooey Kookface Deschanel.  It was like sitting in the pub while a nice but unexciting friend tells you a 2-hour anecdote involving every single mundane conversation he's had in the last 6 months with his on/off girlfriend.  Yawnarama.  It gets an inexplicable imdb score of 7.9.  I'd have given it a 5.7 myself.  Why do people on imdb insist on revering these self-consciously kooky American films where nothing really happens but everyone seems to be under the impression that they're far more adorable and alternative than they really are?  (Does having a character say "I love The Smiths!" guarantee you an extra 10 imdb points?)

The second was Headhunters - a Norwegian crime romp. Loads of Scandi fun!  Total hokum in places but thoroughly entertaining all the way through. Def recommend. This one scores 7.5 on imdb...  *mumble mumble*

In TV news, we've just finished season 2 of Breaking Bad (totally excellent) and have started Season 1 of Braquo.  It makes the cops in Spiral look like morally upstanding paragons of the law.  Total Gomorrah.  (Has anyone ever made a French cop show that wasn't fundamentally rooted in corruption?)

Well that's all for now.  Hope you're all having fun.

Had lots of film fun yesterday - preview of film festival happening in Leeds in Sept - animated shorts and short films were really good but had to move to the back during the showing of No Straight Lines as all the weaving in and out of the bikes made me feel sick. The Hindle Wakes and then Night of the Hunter - god I LOVE Robert Mitchum as a mad preacher....

What else - knitting going well, just about got the hang of cable and done some more lacework and going to knit Dad a banana as he's not allowed them anymore as they're too high in potassium.

Cat-wise, looks like Lucia has cystitis again :-(

I gave up on 500 days after about ten minutes, sounds like I did the right thing.

I meant to see Headhunters at the cinema and it just appeared on Virgin On Demand, so thanks for the recommendation, I think I shall indeed watch it.

I watched 500 days of Summer - I anticipated that I would hate Zooey's character, but she was no-where near as hateful (or indeed kooky) as I had feared.

I thought it was an interesting spin on standard romantic comedy tropes that it was the woman being open about how she wasn't looking for anything serious, and the guy reading things into her behaviour and agonising over what she really thought/felt and endlessly analysing the relationship (and getting the wrong end of the stick).
