You know what I really, really HATE?  
 
Companies that let you sign up for things online, but only let you cancel them by phone*.  *GLARES AT LOVEFILM*.  Presumably this is so that you have no choice but to talk to a sales person who will try to talk you out of it and hard-sell you more crap.  
 
What is even more annoying is to find yourself on a lengthy phone queue with terrible muzak and recorded adverts being read out to you on a loop... and then after ten minutes a recorded voice says "we cannot take your call right now" and hangs-up.  WTFingF?
 
When I eventually get through to the b'stards, I shall be responding to every question with "It's beyond my control."  Yeah, lets see how they like that.
 
* This is on a par with those companies who accept payments by credit card but will only refund by cheque.

How are you paying for this service? Cancel the direct debit or ring the credit card company and stop the payments. Let Lovefilm ring you. I had a Setanta customer service bod ring me after I cancelled a DD. They had the nerve to ask or my personal details to confirm it was really me. "You rang me - I'm not giving you any information.". That flummoxed them.

I did think about doing that, but G reckons we'll end up being chased for an annoying debt for the last month where the account was not yet cancelled.

In the meantime G has written them a cross email... will see if they respond.

I'd still do it. Write to them saying 'account cancelled, send me a bill for outstanding amount'. Pay by cheque?

Ok, well, in fairness to them, they have just replied to G's rant with an auto-generated email confirming cancellation.

However there is a hilarious addendum to the email:
"Have we done something that's really made you go ‘WOW’? Why not
nominate us for an award?"

Yeah, I might just do that... :-)
