Well, if my due date is to be believed then today is indeed Ruprecht Eve.  I suspect it's highly dubious, though...

I certainly don't feel as though he's going to turn up early, which is a good thing.  I do consider earliness to be a  terrible social faux pas.  It's bad enough when you say "8 for 8:30" and your dinner guests arrive at 19:59:59.  So I'm holding out hope that he will have the innate decency not to start contracting at me around 23:59 this evening.   (In any case I think he's allowed to be up to 12 days late before the midwives will take steps to jettison him out by force).

I think G and I have just about got away with our tardy prep.  The car seat is due to be delivered this afternoon.  They won't let you out of hospital unless you have one of those.  Still haven't packed though....  "hospital bag, schmospital bag", so say I.  (Not to mention "birthplan schmirthplan".)

Now that I'm near the end, I've started to think about things that I'm going to miss.  Like pregnancy skin.  Oh, how I  will miss it.  Not only does it go all plump and make you look 5 years younger, but I've suddenly developed freckles on my nose and cheeks!  I LOVE them!  I wish they could stay, but sadly the word on the street is that they will fade soon after sprogging, to be replaced by pallor, eye bags and other general badness.

Also pregnancy hair.  The hair on your head goes all lovely and thick, but apparently will all fall out afterwards. Meanwhile the hair on your body slows down to the point that you hardly ever need to bother shaving your legs.  Sigh...

Also I think I will miss the bump.  It's kind of nice...  the firmest, roundest thing I've ever had on my body.  I've got used to the gentle internal squirming and wriggling and the occasional bulge as something shifts in there.  The other day, while sitting in the cinema, I stroked a lumpy bit and was sure that I could feel individual toes.  I think it might feel a bit lonely and empty in there afterwards...

Of course, needless to say, I will miss the peace and quiet...  am reminding myself to revel in the lull before the storm.

What I won't miss are swollen feet and bladder-induced sleeplessness.  And general uncomfortableness.  Also it will be nice to have a waist again (I can hope)... and to regain enough balance to skip around in death trap heels.

I wonder if I will get my old taste buds back?  I have a feeling that Rup might have inherited G's tastes in food, rather than mine.  I've spent most of this pregnancy with a crazy sweet tooth and cravings for ice cream and milkshakes and sugary breakfast cereals.  That and sweet, tropical fruit juices.  I can't get enough of them.  (Not to mention curries and other calorific stodge).  I have completely failed to drink a single cup of raspberry leaf tea...  I suppose I should start today.

Anyway - Rup is due to be prodded again tomorrow...  and with any luck the midwife might be able to work out whether or not his head is engaged, ready for his big "coming out" party.  Will wait and see.

Meanwhile - back in the sane, real life world - I hope all is going swimmingly with you lot.

Now I think I will watch the second half of Changeling.  I started watching it last night and got about an hour in.  It's better than I was expecting (Angelina films can be a bit patchy) but I'm still feeling a bit shocked by the horribly dark plot turn that suddenly emerged.  It claims to be based on a true story but I am really hoping that it is not.   Anyway, time to find out what happens next...

Have you started nesting madly? Strange as it may sound it does seem to be quite a reliable sign that the baby is on its way when a pregnant woman decides, often at 11.30 at night or some other odd time, that the kitchen cupboards need to be given a very thorough clean, or the attic needs repainting, or whatever. Nature is bizarre.

First babies rarely arrive on time, I'm told. perhaps we should have a sweepstake? I reckon Sunday. :-)

I don't feel very nesty at all today... (though I wonder if I might have got a lot of it out of my system with the crazed DIY urge that took me over for several weeks last month)

Love the idea of a sweepstake! Perhaps I will pin my money on next Monday (12th!)

I've heard that first babies are often late. I was a first and I was 2 weeks late - kept Mum waiting all through Xmas and New Year...

Oooh, exciting!

Changeling - I wasn't expecting that dark turn either. Especially after watching her whizz about on roller skates.

It is based on a true story and that story is a lot more horrible than the film lets on.

Good luck! I hope it all goes smoothly, quickly and painlessly! (Seriously, a friend of mine had her first in 90 minutes and apparently it hardly hurt at all!)

That is the sort of anecdote I love to hear right now!
