So far this week I have received the following naming suggestions for Ruprecht:[Poll #1710467]

In case it is of any interest, here is a link to the Top 100 English boys names

*  if conception is to be taken into account, Ruprecht is borderline French/Italian

I reckon it's not something you can really think logically about. Just keep the suggestions flowing and one name will suddenly feel right to you, like you'd been waiting to hear it. That's the one.

I think you're right. It's a lot easier with cats as you can be as whimsical as you like without fear of name-induced duffings up.

Freddie is cute...

I love "Freddie", because it's one of those names which sounds essentially frou-frou, yet which is often attached to big, properly MANLY MENS.

Actually, I don't like giving my cats names I wouldn't give my children. So consider my cats' names, and offer up a prayer of thanks on behalf of my unborn. A litter of chillers would be a collection of VERY odd names.

I like Rudyard, that's a good one. xxx

We were having trouble thinking of anyone called Rudyard, other than Kipling. (Was it the made-up-name of his day?)

A quick internet search reveals that it's originally a surname. But that Kipling's parents named him after the lake where they met - beat the Beckhams to it! ;) xxx

I'd forgotten how much I loathe the name Hayden and all the other nonsense ones like calling your child after expensive and ridiculous sports cars.

Plus I also forgot to add the danger that people will think you are copying the dreadful Beckhams if you name your child after where they were conceived.

I think the eminently sensible Chiller is right and that once the little fellah comes along so will his name, though hopefully it won't take you as long to decide on that name as it took my folks with my youngest brother - he was baby for nearly 5 weeks til they decided and thank goodness they decided on Ronan and not Kelvin like they had also thought of.

Oh god, the Beckhams. I must proceed with extreme caution. Ken was my dad's name, but the association with Barbie is more than I could take!

I must confess that the Beckhams sprang to my mind too. xxx

Baby's named a bad bad thing (http://www.notwithoutmyhandbag.com/babynames) is always good for a few laughs.

I really love the name Lucien. There are not enough Luciens.

Most names containing "ay" together in that order in the middle of the name sound vulgar. If anyone can think of an exception to this rule, I'd love to hear it.

Maynard. As in Keynes. Although, actually, come to think of it, it sounds fine on him but would probably sound a bit weird on a modern child. Maynard James Keenan from Tool is also called Maynard, but he's American and thus doesn't count for these purposes.

Lucien's a brilliant name, indeed!

I suppose there has to be an exception, but there are a lot fewer Maynards than there are Taylors, Haydens or (*shudder*) Jaydens.

Oh yes, indeed. And Jayne, Wayne, Dwayne etc are utterly ghastly. I bet there are people called Shayne nowadays, too.

Agreed. My middle name is Jane, and I've always sneered privately at Jayne-with-a-y s since crossing swords with one at primary school.

I've yet to hear of a Kayne, but it can only be a matter of time.

If only when someone can't spell Kanye.

I was just thinking that.

I know what you mean about Adolf... Jess once had rather a nice vet called Adolf.

(Benito suffers from a similar fate!)

Well, yes, I suppose it would!

Unrelatedly, I also love the name Jeremy.

I quite like Benito. But as I said, Italian boys' names are for Italian boys. I don't feel the same about Italian girls' names, oddly.

I have a friend whose son has the middle name 'Toast'. It started off as a pregnancy joke cos she could only eat toast when pregnant, then they decided to stick it in as a middle name.

You should do that with Ruprecht...

Toast is very evil indeed. Which remains, of course, a parent's top prerogative. (This boy has very little chance of escaping Ruprecht, I am already chattering away to him as Rupe...)

I know what you mean about diff rules for girls names - I think you can get away with a far higher ponce factor than for boys.

Flavour Flavian

Just remembered ponce-names I do like - Latin ones! Julius, Sextus, Quintus, Agrippa. How awesome would it be to have a son called Agrippa?!
