Talk to me of lovely places
Jan. 12th, 2011 08:59 pmGood evening, fiends.
Would any of you care to suggest good places to visit for a gentle week away in March?
According to the rules of my workplace, I am required (oh noes!) to use up all of my annual leave before I go on maternity leave. So I'm thinking that I'd really like to have one last grown-up holiday with G before before Ruprecht turns up... ideally in March, before I become too ungainly to waddle around.
If you were planning a week away in March, where would you go? Ideally I'd like somewhere a little bit warmer than here and not too gruelling, although we are suckers for European city breaks. Some or all of the following would be good: gorgeous architecture or scenery, historic or arty culture, gentle bustle, cafe lifestyle and lots of good restaurants. It doesn't have to be a city - small, picturesque towns and villages are great, as long as they're easy enough to get to.
What we're not looking for is a 20-something clubbing hotspot or somewhere where there is nothing to do apart from hang around a hotel pool, because I would go stir crazy. (Also this time I might try to aviod uber-busy capital cities, such as Belle Paris.)
So given all of that, I'm not ruling out a return to beautiful, cosy, reliable Florence (+ maybe Siena) but I'm open to new ideas.... (e.g. Nuremberg, anyone?)

Date: 2011-01-12 09:50 pm (UTC)It ticks all your boxes with the exception of restaurants, I found the food to be a bit of a let-down - a French woman told me that the cuisine of that area was tres bon. Mais, non. It's not bad, a lot of stew-type things, which might be what you'd want in March. Nice steaks and I did eat fois gras every single day I was there Don't judge me!

Date: 2011-01-13 08:56 am (UTC)What about Nimes or somewhere else on the south coast of frenchie france - Biarritz? Although don't remember that much about cafe lifestyle.
Vienna was lovely but I can't think of where you would eat as they are all about the meat meat meat.
Tres dull to be in the UK but what about the lake district. I HATE to say it but how much beautiful scenary was in the latest Harry Potter film? Or somewhere in Scotland. You wouldn't get nice weather tho.
