Happy inertia
Dec. 26th, 2010 08:39 pmGood evening, fiends. Hope you're all having marvellous, decadent boxing days.
I've had a lovely christmas this year. It was a bit more chaotic than usual but lots of fun and very relaxed amid the chaos, with my brother and sister and Natalie and Helena (aka my training-level for what is to come) and two overexcited kittens. G did kitchen heroics and I sous cheffed and we upheld xmas traditions by having lots to eat and drink, creating an obscene mountain of wrapping-up paper, watching Doctor Who, playing Triv and having late night Baileys over ice. (Who are we to reinvent xmas?)
So what did you all get up to?
I am very grateful for my pressies. G bought me a surprise Kindle* - what a lovely little gadge! It downloads books in a fraction of a minute and the first book I downloaded happened to be a freebie (M R James ghost stories... inspired by watching the remake of Oh Whistle and I'll Come to You the other day). It also has free 3G, whch means I can use it to access a steampunk version of the internet where everything is black and white and looks like an old printed newspaper. Hoorah!
I seem to have bought G lots of inadvertently giant things this year, such as a large le Creuset pan, some oversized PJs and a scarily huge chinois.... (I had no idea it would be so big when I ordered it online). But I also bought him some lovely normal-sized cufflinks made from antique typewriter keys. I got all sorts of divine smellies and oils that I can rub in my belly (I'm buggered if I'm getting stretch marks with all of that marvellous goop) and a fab little pile of Nancy Mitford books and some Xbox guilty pleasures and a big book of crafts and a new mirror to replace the one Harriet broke and loads of other good things. Also today my sis started to knit again after about 25 years, so I got a new knitting buddy.
Now everyone has left and we've returned the flat to a semi-civilised state... (albeit one with a kitchen accessorised by bin liners and a spare room Pollocked by Helena, using eyeliner and sudocrem). I am relaxing in PJs and the kittens are snoozing and I am hungry AGAIN, because I am a total greedy moo. Bless G, he has just nipped off to the kitchen to make chilli in his new pan.
Traditionally, I like to reserve the days between Xmas and new year for my annual love-in with my Xbox, in which I go underground for several days of pure, guilty hedonism before returning to work. This year, I fear, will be the last... well it's either that or I could spend the days off decorating the hallway and doing other useful things around the house. I'm picturing some of you as shoulder-devils and others as disapproving angels... but who to listen to?
Anyway. 'Tis still boxing day, and I wish you all a happy, peaceful evening - or a riotous one, if you'd prefer.

* G has just told me that the word "kindle" is a collective noun for kittens. So, officially, I now have TWO kindles!
